The very intricate design found on this pattern is directly inspired by the decorative motifs of the Rensaissance. This inspiration is picked up again in the plant-related theme of the design: leaves, vines and flowers interweave and form volutes, a characteristic ornamental motif of that period, created by spiraling scrolls and whorls.
